Lots of Wonderful Evening Sails Ahead

Congratulations to the Duck Dodge and the mysterious tropical island that shows up on Tropical Night, for being named to Seattle Magazine’s Best of 2007 for Best Night on the Water. Admittedly, Seattle Magazine’s Best lists are becoming a bit quirky, and Best Night on the Water is only on the web version of the list, along with Best Place to find Affordable Olives and Best Shop for Roller Derby Supplies, but it is on the list! How often do you see a sailing event on any lists outside of sailing magazines?
The Duck Dodge is honored and rightly so. It’s become a Tuesday night summer ritual for sailors since the “Lake Union Beer Can Regatta” began in 1974. Thanks to Kim and crew for continuing the tradition.
We are lucky in our area to have a number of opportunities to do some summer evening sailing. There are the fun series in Elliott Bay, Des Moines, Shilshole Bay and elsewhere. And, for those who want a bit more competition, most of the yacht clubs host after work evening series. Check the calendar, Lowtides and the Race Report to find something to suit your sailing fancies, because the Best Night on the Water is where ever you are sailing.

Tropical Night of Lake Union’s Duck Dodge

At Lake Union’s 30-plus-year-old weekly summer sailboat race, you can easily end up marooned on the wrong boat after the race, when all the boats that have rafted up to dance and drink untie and go home. On Tropical Night especially, there’s one island you won’t mind being stuck on. During this race, one of the rounding marks is a large wooden float complete with grass hut and palm trees—and volunteers passing out cups of beer to passing boats.
