This Too Shall Pass – Deal With It To those on the east coast, we living out here in the Northwest Territories are still living in log cabins with sod roofs, and still dealing with the Indians. They are surprised to find when visiting, the log cabins are extremely nice with solar panels on the roofs, and the Indians are now dealing to us. There is also the perception that we are a hardy folk of sturdy stock, independent and self reliant. Given our spectacular surroundings, I must say it is a self image we don’t mind perpetuating. This last month produced some challenging weather. While there were some tragic consequences, for most people the high winds, snow and ice were not life threatening, but a prolonged inconvenience. After all, we are a hardy folk and can weather a little inclement weather. Fleece on – fleece off, it’s a way of life. So it was when I was watching the news and the announcement that counselling for “post traumatic stress syndrome” was available for those who had been without power for a few days. What? Now, I can understand being without heat is irritating, we did that ourselves. But was there some life changing segment of Oprah that I missed, or the secret of life revealed when Monique opened case 32 on Deal or No Deal? Post traumatic stress syndrome. Now, when Mount Rainier blows up, or the big quake hits, that will be truly traumatic. But then people will probably be too busy surviving to go to counselling. Sailing is an enjoyable activity, but I’ve never really thought of it as a philosophy until now. It’s kind of a “This too shall pass — deal with it” state of mind. As sailors, we take our wit and knowledge out on the water. We know that the weather, wind and water will do what it will. We accept that. The storms will pass and the sails can be mended. Calamities become challenges. Adversity becomes adventure. Really not a bad way to look at life, on or off the water.
