Getting Ready for the Sailing Season
For many the sailing season never ends. Look at the Race Report on the Duwamish Head race and you’ll see that it takes more than a little frost on the pumpkin to keep these sailing zealots off the water. But for most, the sailing season starts with the boat shows. Warmed by the inner glow of past summers, and the anticipation of, once again, sailing blissfully over Northwest waters with family and friends, sailors are preparing for the upcoming sailing season. At south Lake Union, I enjoyed talking with sailors who, through chattering teeth, talked about their plans for the summer. In the Exhibition Hall at Qwest Field it was a bit warmer. Boaters meandered through the garden of nautical delights; pricing sails, electronics and countless goodies that were just the thing to make the boat, captain and crew ready to venture onto the high seas, low seas, or whatever floats your boat and spirit.
We’re also preparing for the upcoming season and could use your help. Don’t worry, there’s no bottom to scrub or brightwork to varnish. We’ve posted a reader survey online to get feedback from you as to who “you” are and what you like: Cruising articles, Race Report, Lowtide news, Letters, Classifieds. Click on the 48° North Reader Survey icon at right. As a thank you for filling out the survey, we’ll be drawing names to win Lewmar winch handles and 48° North hats and shirts.
Yacht Club Race Committees/U.S. Coast Guard Meeting
48° North will again be hosting the annual get together of the Coast Guard and the Yacht Club Race Committees to talk about the upcoming racing season. Discussions will include event permits, deadlines for submitting race applications to the Coast Guard, VTS lanes, and more. Marine Permit Officer PO Knappe and other CG personnel will join us so that everyone will be on the same page for the upcoming racing season. As most clubs change chairpersons every year, this is a good time to get acquainted and obtain the crucial information you need to make sure your event is safe and fun for all. The meeting will be held February 20th at 6 PM, at the 48° North office, 6327 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle (behind the Shilshole West Marine store).
