2008 Off to a Fast Start Boat Shows 48° North/Harken Top 25 Coast Guard Race Meeting Feb. 4 It may not look like it outside, but here we are at the beginning of another boating season, even if it seems like we should be putting sails on an ark. The winter weather tends to dampen, if not freeze, our thoughts of sailing, but our pilot lights are still on. With boat shows in Seattle, Vancouver, B.C. and Portland these next few months, there’s plenty to dream about. Lots of good boat show stuff in this issue, including the free speaker schedule at the Seattle Boat Show. You’ll also find specs on 20 new/newer sailboats. Speaking of designs, we’re pleased to have a feature on Seattle’s iconic yacht designer Robert Perry. Bob’s prolific and diverse creations reflect his traditional roots alongside his concepts for the future. Once again Harken joins us in celebrating the 48° North Top 25 Racing Keelboats. The list rewards not only the skill of these sailors, but also their dedication to the sport. The more you race, the better your chances. Our winner (you probably don’t need three guesses) left no mark unturned, sailing every race on our list and more. Impressive. Attention all yacht club race committee chairpersons! 48° North will be hosting another get together with the Coast Guard to talk about the upcoming racing season. Discussions will include event permits, deadlines for submitting race applications to the CG, transit lanes and more. New Commander LCD Wickman and Marine Permit Officer PO Knappe and other CG personnel will join us so everyone will be on the same page for the coming sailing season. As most clubs change chairpersons every year, this is a good time to get acquainted and obtain the crucial information you need to make sure your event is safe and fun for all. The meeting will be held February 4th at 6 PM, at the old Ballard Library, now Abraxus Books, 5711 24th Ave. NW, Seattle. Any questions, give us a call (206) 789-7350. See you at the Boat Show. |
