Sailing Through Another Year

It’s hats and horns time again here at 48° North as we complete our 26th year of being a part of the Pacific Northwest sailing scene. It truly is a group effort, not just by the staff in the office, but by cruisers, racers, clubs, Coast Guard, and many, many other individuals and organizations who help us keep you informed.
If there’s any group of people that are known for telling stories it’s sailors. We’re pleased and privileged to present stories from Northwest sailors about their experiences both locally and across the seven seas – adventures that entertain, educate and stir our souls to get out on the water. Whether it’s sailing to Friday Harbor or Tahiti, it’s all adventure and we thank them.
We also have an impressive cast of characters that contribute regularly; Diana Jessie, Tom Averna, Jo Bailey and Carl Nyberg, Anne and Laurence Yeadon-Jones, Eric Manchester, Migael Scherer, Sudie Parker, Cliff Estes, Vicky MacFeidh and Amanda Swan Neal. Thousands of miles have passed beneath their keels and we appreciate their taking the time to share it all with us.
For almost 25 years, Ed von Wolffersdorff’s “The Racing Rules” column appeared in 48° North, trying to keep us from bumping into each other. His contribution to the racing scene here in the Northwest has been immeasurable, and his numerous awards attest to how much he is appreciated. This year Ed has turned over his column for a while to Butch Ulmer who continues to present racing situations and solutions. We cannot begin to thank Ed enough for his being an integral part of the magazine and a good friend to us all.
So, you’d think after 26 years we’d have this sailing magazine business all figured out. But, just as the winds and tides change, so does everything else, and we need to make sure we’re on the right tack. Every so often we do a survey to see what people like/dislike, etc. to give us a more detailed idea of what readers are thinking and doing. Please take the time to sit back, relax, and fill out the survey on page 37 & 38. All information is confidential and you won’t be put on somebody else’s mailing list. Sure beats a phone call at dinner. Send it in by November 1st and who knows, you might even win a nice prize.
Of course there wouldn’t be a free 48° North magazine without our loyal advertisers, so please visit them daily, spend lots of money, and say you saw them in 48° North.
Thanks again to all. Time to head for the San Juans, recharge the batteries, and sail into the 27th year of your 48° North Sailing Magazine.
