For the fifth straight year, the Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC) in Port Townsend will play host to “She Tells Sea Tales” — an incredible collaboration of talented women who work and play on the water.
She Tells Sea Tales is an evening of sea stories told by female mariners in support of the Girls Boat Project, an ongoing program aimed to inspires the next generation of young women and men to pursue a life connected to the ocean. Presenters will include Kaci Cronkhite, Carol Hasse, Cait Miller, Bonnie Obremski, Sue Schaeffer, Kate Starling and Ava Veitenhans, along with art by K Robinson and music by Ace Spragg.
The event takes place on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the NWMC, 431 Water St. Port Townsend. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., event starts at 7 p.m. Beer, cider and food will be available. Tickets are $17 ahead of time or $20 at the door.
The Girls’ Boat Project is a program for middle school girls that creates an inclusive, supportive space for young women to work together and gain confidence through learning skills in boat building, woodworking and sailing. The program is led and taught by an all-female staff of educators and professional mariners, and meets every Wednesday throughout the school year. It culminates with a journey on Port Townsend Bay in the spring.
Port Townsend High School Maritime Career and Technical Education Teacher, and program founder, Kelly Wilson, describes the event as, “She Tells Sea Tales celebrates the successes and tribulations of working and traveling on the water. It celebrates the joys and frustrations of being a minority in a male-dominated endeavor.”
