Since it is one of the more unique new races on the Salish Sea, we are excited to draw some attention to one of the events near the top of our “Haven’t Done, But Can’t Wait To Do” lists. So, even though it’s a few months in the past now, here’s some info from the Race Chair about this year’s Salish Sea Regatta.
The Salish Sea Regatta, established by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC) four years ago, has quickly become a favorite in the regional sailing calendar. Held in early September, this three-day event combines exhilarating daytime races with evenings dedicated to socializing, games, and relaxation at RVYC’s exclusive outstations. The regatta celebrates the best of British Columbia’s waters and the vibrant regional sailing community that makes it all possible.
The event kicks off on Friday with a race from English Bay in Vancouver to RVYC’s Garden Bay station in Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast. Saturday features a leg from Pender Harbour to Tugboat Island near Silva Bay on Gabriola Island, while Sunday sees the fleet return to Vancouver. A shorter two-day option starts on Saturday, giving slower boats the opportunity to join the festivities while sailing from Vancouver to Tugboat Island and back. All races are held during daylight hours, leaving evenings free for the kind of lively dockside fun that makes this regatta truly special.
This year, 19 boats ranging from 35 to 77 feet participated in the three-day event, while four boats opted for the two-day version. The regatta opened on Friday with a building northwest breeze, prompting a mix of tactical decisions. Some boats went left, chasing higher winds, while others played the Sechelt shore for favorable lifts and reduced current. Despite a slow finish for many boats near Thormanby Island, spirits were high as crews gathered for a fantastic evening at Garden Bay. A highlight of the post-race activities was a lively karaoke competition where each boat was represented by a crew member belting out tunes to the delight of the fleet. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day on the water.
Saturday brought clear skies and steady northwest winds, allowing the fleet to enjoy a stunning 27-mile spinnaker run to Tugboat Island. Along the way, sailors were treated to the unforgettable sight of multiple pods of whales dancing and playing in the waves—a magical moment that reminded everyone of the beauty of racing in these waters. Once docked, the fun continued with a Laser match racing series using club-owned boats, drawing cheers and laughter from crews and some motorboat spectators!
Sunday dawned with another day of clear skies and light breezes, making for a pleasant close-hauled fetch back to English Bay. The fleet crossed the finish line near RVYC’s clubhouse, wrapping up a regatta filled with unforgettable moments on and off the water.
From the camaraderie of the dock parties to the awe-inspiring wildlife sightings, the Salish Sea Regatta once again showcased the perfect balance of competitive racing and social connection.
With four boats traveling from the U.S. and one from Vancouver Island, this year’s event demonstrated its growing appeal. Mark your calendars for next year’s regatta, September 5–7, 2025, and join us for a weekend of incredible racing in stunning surroundings paired with evenings filled with games, laughter and friendship.
