CYC Turkey Bowl Regatta, which was also the District 22 Grand Prix Series Finale, brought varied dinghy fleets to Puget Sound for late fall fun with some excellent conditions on November 19-20. Here’s the report from the singlehanded fleet.

Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle’s annual Turkey Bowl Regatta kicked off Thanksgiving week, with 34 ILCAs (formerly known as Lasers) in various rig sizes — four 4.7s, twenty-two 6s, eight 7s — and ten RS Aeros sharing the course with Optimist, FJ, 420, 505 and Star classes. A total of 76 boats competed. This regatta also served as the finale of the ILCA DISTRICT 22 Grand Prix Series 2022 sponsored by West Coast Sailing.

CYC Seattle’s race committee skillfully managed to get five races completed on Saturday for each fleet, as they simultaneously and continuously started and finished fleets. The light wind on Sunday allowed for only three races before retiring for the day —  but who could complain about a total of eight races for the weekend?

A steady 10-12 knot northerly greeted sailors on Saturday, and in spite of overnight freezing temperatures, the sunny blue sky lead to nearly 50 degrees by mid afternoon and a perfect day of sailing. After Saturday racing CYC welcomed us with hot chili and refreshments.

On Sunday the wind was a light southerly and slightly overcast. Racing started at 11 AM on both days amidst a rising tide that swung about 4 feet between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and then dropping by the end of racing at 3 p.m. The swing made a difference on both days, for better or worse, as did the late afternoon wind moving more northeasterly on Saturday and southwesterly on Sunday.

Thanks to all of you who participated, many of whom travelled from Vancouver BC, Vancouver/Portland, Bellingham, Olympia, Bellevue/Kirkland, Bainbridge Island, Whidbey Island. We hope to see you all at the annual Frigid Digit Regatta in January.
